Job Description

The Music Director embodies rock and roll in a positive way and is responsible for creating the most valuable student experience possible. This role creates a safe and inspiring environment for students to achieve their musical and creative potential and ensures that each School of Rock student has an exceptional musical journey.
Staff Management and Development
- Identify, hire and train music instructors that will successfully deliver the School of Rock curriculum
- Manage teaching assignments, ensuring instructors are being assigned to maximize student progression, best use instructor skills and manage staff budget effectively
- Promptly address instructor related issues, such as substitution, reassignment and discipline.
- Communicate any scheduling changes to the General Manager and Studio Coordinator
- Recommend staffing changes and non-planned staffing-related expenses to the General Manager
- Hold instructor staff meeting late in the season to review show plan and discuss next season
- Regularly audit staff performance (shadow lessons and rehearsals)
Curriculum
- Ensure Corporate-approved curriculum is being taught by all instructors within the school
- Where the option exists, propose to the General Manager modifications or enhancements to Corporate curriculum that will benefit the school.
- Ensure compliance of music copyrights by instructors
Student Development
- Ensure Instructors are documenting student assignments and progress
- Communicate with Instructors regularly about each student’s progress
- Recommend student “graduation” from one program to the next
- As needed, discuss student progression with parents
Performances and Venues
- Oversees all school performances, including venue negotiation and selection, performance scheduling and at-show instructor assignments
- Lock venue and communicate show details per the season workback schedule
- Handles day of show music and performance related issues
- Oversee audition logistics, including scoring process, rules, and song selection
- Recommends selected students and assignments to the Owner
- Handle all rehearsal and performance specifics, including venue negotiation and show schedule and at show music and performance related issues
Music Instruction
- Direct three programs: House Band, Adult Program and one Performance Program each season
- Carry a teaching load, primarily with more advanced students
- Handle most trial lessons to assess the student for placement with an instructor
- Support other instructors as a Program assistant
Other
- Manage Audition-Only programs: House Band and All-Star participation
- Maintain school musical equipment, ensuring it is in good working order
- Represent music programs in weekly status and season planning
- Maintain relationships with other School of Rock music directors, understanding best practices
- Develop relationships within the community with venues, and other music-oriented businesses and individuals
Skill Requirements
- 3+ years’ experience teaching and/or performing music professionally
- Knowledge of music theory and curriculum design
- Excellent ability to work well with a wide range of student and parents
- Strong organizational skills
- Very strong customer relations skills
- Resourceful and good problem-solver
- Work well under pressure
- Ideal candidate is a working musician who also has formal music school training
- Enthusiastic, Flexible, patient, and positive demeanor
- Good judgment a must
