****POSITION SUMMARY****
The Director of Fitness and Recreation is responsible for all aspects of Fitness Center operations (which accounts for 75-80% of position): programming, personal and small group (SGT) training and group exercise classes, personnel management (including hiring, supervision and performance management), budgeting, scheduling Fitness floor staff, and overseeing new member onboarding. This position is also responsible for coordinating sports and recreational programming (which accounts for 20-25% of the position) for all pre-school, youth and adult leagues and sessions (including summer sports camps, seasonal sports leagues, skill classes, etc.).
** **ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES****
**Fitness Center**
* Supervise all part-time and full-time staff; work with staff to increase personal training and SGT revenue;
* Schedule Fitness floor staff based on the needs of the fitness center and within the allocated budgeted amount;
* Process fitness and sports departments bi-weekly payroll;
* Hire, train and supervise fitness and sports staff;
* Schedule ongoing training sessions for staff focusing on customer service;
* Maintain all cardiovascular and weight equipment and ensure that all equipment is in perfect working order. Maintain log book of repairs, communicate with the service company, the members and staff about the equipment that is in need of repair and the status of the equipment repair; manage repair expense line;
* Supervise and maintain a clean environment, including cleaning equipment and restacking weights;
* Maintain consistent communication with members through e-mails, newsletter, internal signs and website. Work with the Communications Department on these communication needs so that they happen in a timely and professional manner.
* Promote new Fitness Center Programs and events and work with Communications department to create marketing materials and strategies to help increase revenue and add value to the JCC member experience.
**New Member On-Boarding**
* Work with General Manager of Fitness & Membership to create systems to schedule all new members for on-boarding appointments;
* Oversee and monitor effectiveness of new member onboarding and review effectiveness monthly with GM;
* Ensure all new members complete a goals assessment and availability form.
**Recreational Sports**
* Develop plan to identify, develop and retain participants in all sports and recreation programs;
* Develop and organize youth sports programs that meet the needs of our JCC families, either through JCC instructors and contracted partnerships that currently exist;
* Assume responsibility for all gymnasium activities, including gym rentals which includes creating contracts and acquiring proper insurance in certain instances;
* Assume responsibility for preparation of the athletic field;
* Plan and implement summer sports camps; supervise staff and programming;
**General**
* Participate in lay-leader committee and board meetings and generate reports for review
* Attend agency and fitness center staff meetings/training and development.
* Participate in building coverage on a regular rotational basis; may include opening, closing and weekend/holiday shifts
* Responsible for working cross departmentally to achieve Fitness/Sports goals;
* Complete additional responsibilities as assigned.
** **EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:****
* Bachelors degree in exercise science or a related field;
* 2-3 years experience personal training or working in a fitness or wellness environment;
* CPR/AED & First Aid certification (if not current obtained within 3 months);
* Personal training certification in through ACSM, ACE or NASM
* Group Fitness certification preferred
** **KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:****
* Experience in supervising, motivating and developing staff;
* Excellent customer service, interpersonal and communication skills ;
* Functional knowledge of MS Office applications and the ability to learn proprietary software;
* Demonstrated ability in fitness testing, evaluation and risk screening.
** **WORK ENVIRONMENT:****
This person must be able to work independently in a fast-paced environment. The position requires high mobility, standing, walking, bending and sitting. Must be able to climb steps, bend and move. Must be able to lift, carry or move significant weight (ie, weight equipment in excess of 100 pounds).
