Chief Financial Officer

Position Summary: The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting (PYM) is responsible for all financial operations, including the operating, restricted, and capital budgets, financial planning and analysis, risk management and regulatory compliance, granting functions, property, insurance, retirement plans, and investments. PYM has 25 employees and a total budget of $4.5 million.

The CFO supports the General Secretary (PYM’s CEO) to ensure the yearly meeting is always meeting its fiduciary responsibilities and taking financial initiatives as needed. The CFO works closely with the volunteer Treasurer of PYM, and provides support on fiduciary, business, and policy concerns to the General Secretary, the councils (PYM’s board of directors) and the Arch Street Meeting House Preservation Trust (ASMHPT — a supporting organization of PYM) as well as various committees of PYM and ASHMT.

This position supervises the Assistant Controller and maintains relationships with outside financial consultants such as PYM’s accountants and actuaries.

Responsibilities:

  1. Financial Planning. Analysis and forecasting for PYM’s long-term financial health and success. Prepares operating, restricted and capital budgets in consultation with the General Secretary and ASMHPT. Steward budgets through review and approval process. Monitors finances, responds to changes in circumstances.

  1. Financial Operations. Develops and implements best practices to maintain the health of the organization’s financial operations.
  2. Reporting. Ensures timely reporting of relevant financial information to staff, governance, PYM volunteer groups and community. Designs, implements and maintains internal controls for the preparation and presentation of financial statements in accordance with US GAAP.

  1. Cash Flow and Investments. Manages strategies to ensure liquidity for business operations and manages restricted cash to support granting functions and PYM programs. Monitors investments, both where PYM is the trustee and where others are trustees of funds in which PYM has a beneficial

  1. Risk Management and Compliance. Ensures PYM maintains regulatory compliance as a nonprofit organization. Ensures PYM’s – restricted fund income is used in alignment with donor intent.

  1. Oversees PYM-owned facilities, ensuring they are well managed and resourced.

  1. Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with Quaker faith and practices, and a willingness to gain, deepen, and nurture such knowledge.
  • A minimum of five years of executive management experience with increasing responsibility over years in finance, accounting or corporate or nonprofit management
  • Knowledge of non-profit accounting practices and laws.
  • Familiarity with accounting software.
  • Direct Supervisory experience.
  • Demonstrated experience managing multiple teams and multiple complex projects involving diverse teams of people and interest groups.
  • Proven written and oral communication skills.
  • Extensive experience communicating effectively about complex financial issues with internal and external stakeholders, including Boards of Directors, volunteers, and constituents.
  • Extensive knowledge of Microsoft Excel and other Microsoft office applications.

Desired Qualifications:

  • An active Friend or extensive experience with Friends’ meetings; Deep understanding of the Quaker faith; established relationship to the Quaker community; familiarity with Quaker principles and practices; experience with -Spirit-led consultative decision processes.

o Senior-level staff (Managers with 5 or more years’ experience with PYM or similar organization) Candidates work for Racial Equity. They consistently integrate their deep understanding of key racial equity concepts into work projects and interactions by addressing structural implications and disproportionate impacts of policies, campaign objectives, organizing objectives, activities, and decisions on race, class and other group identities within the context of job responsibilities and projects.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT: PYM’s offices are located in the heart of Center City Philadelphia in a LEED certified green building called Friends Center. Currently hybrid (minimum of 2 days in the office) the PYM staff enjoys a friendly and welcoming workplace environment and collegial culture. The building complex houses a range of interesting non-profits serving local, regional, and international missions. Surrounded by an array of cultural institutions, restaurants and parks, Friends Center is minutes away from various transit portals and many of Philadelphia’s best sites.

Time and Travel Expectations: This is a full-time, exempt position. Full-time at PYM is 35 hour per week. Workdays are typically 7 hours and time can be flexed to begin and end at times that meet work and personal needs. Currently staff work remotely. Prior to the pandemic staff worked from home on Mondays and Fridays if desired and if work tasks could be done remotely. Ability to travel throughout the four-state region of PYM and to work evenings and weekends several times a month. Attend the 5-day gathering (Annual Sessions) held in residence on a college campus in the summer.

Compensation and Benefits: This position reports to the General Secretary. The salary range is $110,000-$120,000. Benefits include medical, dental and life insurance, commuter and health FSAs, a 403(b)-retirement plan with 7% employer contribution plus 3% match, generous paid time off including yearly vacation days (20), personal days (4), holidays (11), and sick days (12), flexible work schedule which currently allows up to three days of work from home weekly.
